Whazzup folks! New Orleans music. There’s a WHOLE lot of it. So let’s just start with some basics here and get you primed with the legends. We’ll be hitting the old time jazz, the modern NOLA jazz, the brass bands, the jazz revival, the funk, the R&B,…New Orleans….it’s everything. For this first installment I’m touching upon just a few of the New Orleans heavy weights and virtuosos that you’ve all no doubt heard of from history books, the radio and perhaps your folks. Don’t count on a history lesson here folks. This is simply for your listening pleasure.

Jelly Roll Morton

Album: Jelly Roll Morton: 1926-1930

Box set. Pretty much the way you wanna go if you’re checking out someone like Jelly Roll Morton. This one’s got all the hits and lays out who this dude was all about. Jelly Roll is the original gangster pimp and he lived the life. He made claims that were seemingly outrageous, but he also lived at a time when the music industry was young and the musicians were vulnerable to the cats in the business suits. He got screwed big time, but his music stands the test of time as does the legend he created. Check out “The Pearls”, “The Chant”, “Dead Man Blues”, “Sidewalk Blues”, “Jungle Blues”, “Shreveport Stomp”, “Doctor Jazz”, “Winin’ Boy Blues”, “Sweet Substitute”,…the list is huge, just like his Jelly Roll.

Dead Man Blues
Wolverine Blues

Sidney Bechet

Album: The Best of Sidney Bechet

Yes, a “best of” record. Usually I hate “best of” offerings. However, this one’s got a couple pivotal recordings that forever changed the way I heard the clarinet and jazz/blues music. Check out “Blue Horizon” and “Summertime”, pristine and simplistic takes on what all music is about. Sidney was doing it perhaps before anyone. I preferred his clarinet to his soprano saxophone, for which he’s mostly know. He played the “albert’s system” clarinet which is somewhat unique to early New Orleans music and gets that deep dark sexy’ tone that cats today find elusive and alluring,…mmmm yea. Sidney has a lotta corny stuff out there, so be forewarned that a lot of his later stuff is somewhat questionable in my thinkings. Be sure to check out the youtube down there of Texas Moaner Blues – Louis Armstrong & Sidney Bechet on there – oh my…..that’s the Clarence Williams’ Blue Five, check that out too folks.

Youtube:
Blue Horizon
Summertime
Texas Moaner blues

King Oliver

Album: King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band: The Complete Set

If you’re going to deal with King Oliver, get the “complete set”, because that’s pretty much it, everything you need, right there. Louis Armstrong’s first real deal. King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, two trumpet band, tight ass breaks and improvisation. The band is amazing. The recordings are lacking due to the recording technology of the day, y’no, early 20’s – didn’t exactly have ProTools n junk back then. Some folks tend to think that the bands of that era didnt use string bass and those folks are morons. Those cats used whatever they could get their hands on, string bass, tuba, bass saxophone, gut bucket, whatever. Imagine this band with a big booming thumping bass and Baby Dodds goin’ hog wild on his junk. Dayam. Only thing I can’t stand about these recordings is Johnny Dodds. One of the most overrated musicians of all time. Check out the blues and the arrangements. Some soulful junk they’re putting out there folks.

Youtube:
Riverside Blues
Canal Street Blues

Louis Armstrong

Album: The Hot Fives and Sevens

It’s all right here, Pops in all his glory. If you haven’t checked these out, you don’t know a dam thing about Pops. It needs no further explanation. If you don’t get it, you never will (talking to you trumpet playahs). Pops has a ton more stuff that I’ll bring up a little later on. But this will always be THE shit that defines Pops, as far as I’m concerned. The clarinet players largely sucked in these recordings as far as I’m concerned. Pops is the shit though…..listening to this stuff right now as I type all this junk out. Dam – check out Hotter Than That.

Youtube:
West End Blues

Wrap Up

You do know this is not even scratching the surface here folks, but it’s a good start and a lotta stuff to wrap your heads around. I am neither historian or writer, but I love and dig this music. And that’s where I’m at. Where you at?

Be sure to check the San Francisco Bourbon Kings web site and/or the Facebook events page for our next gig!!

About Music For Tomorrow

Music for Tomorrow (MFT) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity organization that seeks to save the jazz music of today for the world of tomorrow. We do this in two ways: first, by supporting the jazz creative economy through grants, programs, and ventures; second, by growing the audience for jazz through traditional and social media, which in turns supports the jazz creative economy. We provide musicians with working opportunities, produce music events, grow jazz audiences, connect listeners and musicians through social media, and distribute funds to programs that aid jazz and jazz musicians.

Who Dat? SFBK!!!!!

Founded in the fall of 2009, the co-led San Francisco Bourbon Kings was created for only one reason, to have a good time! The music of SFBK includes originals, traditional and classic New Orleans with most of its members having lived, performed and recorded with some of its’ hometown Masters. Our interpretation is not to recreate New Orleans music but rather embody the spirit, swing and grooves that make you shake your whole body. New Orleans is the foundation for all of American music. Come dance, sing and party with the Kings.

The band features the uniquely diverse talents of Jaz Sawyer (drums), Rob Barics (reeds), Mike Olmos (trumpet), Mike Irwin Johnson (banjo/guitar), Dayna Stephens (bass) and Danny Grewen (trombone).
